Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
