In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
