EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
